Accuplacer/COMPASS
SENIORS: May be able to take the ACCUPLACER AT BHS. Please check with your counselor for dates and information. Students: You must apply to the college at least 2 weeks before the test date!! If you are attending a college other than RCTC, you need to contact that college for a distance proctor voucher.Accuplacer
Minnesota State College and University (MnSCU) two year and technical colleges require all new students take the Accuplacer exam before they are allowed to register for classes. Students must test at college level in order to take college classes. If test scores are below level, students must take remedial or developmental classes to improve their skills before they are allowed to complete college level work. High school students should take as rigorous coursework as they can manage to improve their skills and to avoid having to pay college tuition for remedial coursework. Students can retake the exam one additional time within six months to improve their score. Practice tests are available online. Download the free web based study app. Accuplacer link.
NOTE: MnSCU colleges will accept ACT or MCA scores in lieu of Accuplacer if the student's scores meet the college requirement. Be sure to ask the college to review your test scores.
Wisconsin two year and technical colleges require students the Compass exam before they are allowed to register for college level classes.
ASVAB
The military requires interested recruits complete the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery). It is one of the most widely used, multiple-aptitude tests in the world, developed and maintained by the Department of Defense. BHS students can take the exam in Rochester (check under upcoming events), or arrange a time with a recruiter. Practice tests are available and all students are strongly encouraged to prepare for this exam as the scores will determine which military occupational specialty the recruit is eligible to apply. PSAT
The PSAT test is Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. It measures the critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills your students will need for higher education and careers after high school. This test prepares students for the SAT test and all rules and regulations are governed by the College Board.
Junior students who score exceptionally well (top one percentile or above in the nation) may be eligible to be a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship. Registration for juniors will be open in the spring of their 10th grade year. Interested students must sign up and pay the fee in the spring to take the test in the fall. Interested sophomores may also sign up and pay for the test in the spring of their 9th grade year. Please note, sophomores are not allowed to compete for the scholarship. It is only a practice PSAT for 10 grade students. No fall registration will occur.
