When a student is ill, parents often wonder whether or not to keep a child at home from school. Keep in mind that if a child stays home and has the care that he/she needs when first sick, they will often get better faster. Staying home is also one of the best ways to keep others from becoming ill.

Reasons why children should stay at home:

  1. Severe colds, coughs, or sore throats
  2. Vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and/or abdominal pain
  3. Temperature of 100 degrees or more with or without symptoms of an illness
  4. Eye infections, especially if discharge is present
  5. New skin rashes, especially if draining-unless medical opinion states rash is not contagious
  6. Until results of laboratory tests (i.e. throat culture, nasal swab) are known.
  7. Any other signs of acute illness or not feeling well

Children may return to school when:

  1. Temperature remains normal for 24 hour period without using Tylenol or Ibuprofen
  2. Free of all symptoms for 24 hours (i.e. has not vomited, had diarrhea, or had abdominal pain in 24 hours)
  3. Well enough to participate in normal school activities
  4. On antibiotics for at least 24 hours
  5. Your healthcare provider states that your child can return to school

Remember: The #1 way to prevent the spread of germs is to wash your hands.
